This year, as she mentioned early in the year, Bernadine was going to take a break from exhibiting and refocus on the direction her art and on the making of art.  For the Crawl, she has mounted a small exhibition of her most recent work including three paintings from her "Home" series and six paintings from her "Pears" series. In addition, she will be offering 11 more of her ever-popular "Ravens" for sale and several pieces from two mixed media series entitled "Balancing Act" and "Silver Lining."  See her Facebook page or her Eastside Culture Crawl profile for a preview of some of these pieces.

Bernadine has also been working on a large exhibition series entitled "Family Px: Exploring the Personalities of a Dissociative Identity System."  She will be offering a preview of this exhibition at the Crawl.  The entire series will be mounted in March of 2012 at Brittannia Art Gallery.

(in Conjunction with Not My Love(r) Exhibition)

Artist- facilitated discussion on the nature of creativity

Creativity can sweep us up into that perfect zone where time slips away and everything we touch turns into works of art.  But it can also abandon us in blank canvases, lumps of clay, and thoroughly white pages that scream for words.  Creativity is not just for "artsy" folks.  It is the process of bringing together new ideas and, therefore, rightly belongs to everyone.  Bernadine Fox BFA, visual artist and writer, will lead this discussion on creativity.  Where does it come from?  How can we nurture it?  What are the different processes for men and women?  And what hurts it?  Come share your questions and ideas, and celebrate Bernadine's painting exhibition, currently on display at Rhizome.

Coffee, tea and other beverages will be provided.

VANCOUVER SUN-- The century-old Metropole in Vancouver’s gritty Downtown Eastside will re-launch this week as a “community pub”, with its new owners promising 25 per cent of annual profits to local charities. The community concept “just makes total sense for the neighbourhood,” said Nate Sabine, marketing director for Donnelly Hospitality Management.  The Met has been operating out of the five-storey brick building at 320 Abbott Street since 1906, and has suffered many ups and downs in fortune over that time.  At one point, according to media reports, the late Bruce Eriksen, a city councillor and social activist, deemed it the “armpit of the Downtown Eastside.”

Indeed, said Sabine, when Donnelly first purchased the pub last year, “it was really just a step up from a heroin-shooting gallery.”  The company — which owns and operates 12 bars and nightclubs across Vancouver — lost little time renovating the space, including replacing the furniture and restoring the floors and walls to their original wood and brick. These days, Sabine said, the business appears more like a “well-run dive” with cheap beer ($4 a pint), vintage pinball machines and a DJ booth attracting a mainly young crowd of “hipsters” and artists.

“We just cleaned the place up a little bit without losing the character,” Sabine said.

On Wednesday, the pub’s official re-launch party will feature an art exhibit and auction to benefit the Gallery Gachet, one of the four local non-profits chosen to receive Met profits. The event runs 7 to 10 p.m., with tickets available at the door for $10. Other charities earmarked for assistance by the Donnelly Fund, the charitable arm of Donnelly Hospitality Management, include United We Can, the Downtown Eastside Women’s Center, and the Vancouver Food Bank.

Brian Dodd, executive director of United We Can, said the promise of targeted money from the Met means more people considered “unemployable” because of mental health, poverty, addiction and physical disabilities will now be able to find work in their community.  On Donnelly’s request, Dodd said, the donated funds will be directed to the charity’s lane-cleaning program in the Gastown area. The program employs local residents to pick up litter, clean sidewalks, lanes, alleys and other public spaces.

“It’s wonderful. It’s a win-win for everyone,” Dodd said of the deal.

It’s not the first time the Met has been tapped as a potential revenue source to aid the poverty-stricken Downtown Eastside neighbourhood. A decade ago, the building — which includes four floors of social housing — was handed over to the Downtown Eastside Residents Association to run as part of a private-public partnership, with the help of a $1-million cash injection from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. In 2003, the controversial project collapsed into receivership, and resulted in the removal of three members of DERA’s executive board over an apparent conflict of interest arising from their involvement as directors in a numbered company set up to operate the pub. In the mid-1980s, the pub gained notoriety when its owners of the day evicted its low-income tenants in the lead-up to Expo 86.

“It was pretty awful. I remember one [resident] had only one leg,” said former city councillor Jim Green. “There were a lot of horror stories around it at the time.”

The building, including both the hotel and Met pub, was assessed in 2010 at 3.2 million. Records show the property was last sold in 2005 for $3.9 million. As of March 30, 2010, the company director was listed as Philip Kim. The Met continues to operate as a single-room occupancy hotel.

Several of my newest pieces will be part of the group exhibition at Gallery Gachet (88 E. Crodova St. Vancouver, BC)  entitled

A Collective Response

Exhibition runs: 5th – 28th February, 2010

Opening Reception: Fri Feb 5th, 7 – 10pm

Dance Party Celebrating the Arts: Sat Feb 13th, 8 - late

(With support from Art Walk 2010 and the Alliance for Arts and Culture)

Gallery Gachet presents the exhibition A Collective Response, featuring The Gallery Gachet Collective’s response to the current cultural landscape in Vancouver. The exhibition showcases each artist’s reaction to the arts funding cuts through their own art-making practice, celebrating and reinforcing the importance of art as a critical means for achieving a healthy and flourishing society.

A Collective Response aims to focus on the critical role of art in society, in particular as a way of responding to contemporary issues. Vancouver is currently undergoing a massive upheaval, and these changes affect all its citizens profoundly. Gallery Gachet’s Collective Membership feels strongly about the importance of community engagement and asserting a response to these changes, and they believe that art provides a powerful and significant channel for dialogue.

Based on the idea of Documenta (an international contemporary art exhibition held in Kassel, Germany every five years), The Collective will transform Gallery Gachet into a ‘free speech zone’ offering both commentary and critique of issues relevant to art and life in Vancouver at this specific historical juncture. Thematically, the work addresses the massive funding cuts that most arts organizations have received in BC, as well as political priorities and how these precedents impact our cultural climate. The Gachet Collective believes in the expression of art and culture as a human right, and as a means for achieving social, cultural and economic justice.

The link between A Collective Response and Documenta is one of intention and spirit. Documenta is known as an exhibition that explores the intersection between contemporary art and the current critical issues of the time, inviting people from all over the world to convene, assess the situation, and enact a dialogic process. Documenta began in the early 1950’s, and was developed as a response to the “degenerate art” politics of the Third Reich. In contrast to other international exhibitions that emerged from the “World Fair” models, the tradition behind Documenta is one of theoretical grounding, and a sense of urgency in regards to the role and meaning of art in society. Inclusivity and dissolution of elitism are founding values of the festival; these beliefs are also woven into the core of The Collective’s ideology and integral values that are unanimously held by The Collective.

A Collective Response will feature multidisciplinary works from Gachet’s twenty-one collective members, and represents not only the distinct response of each individual member but also the unique energy and drive behind The Gachet Collective as a whole.
